John Fontaine papers, 1820-1931 (bulk 1832-1866).

The collection consists of papers of John Fontaine from 1820-1931. Contains mostly business correspondence, receipts, and invoices, pertaining to Stewart & Fontaine, commission merchants in Columbus, Georgia. The correspondence deals with the buying and selling of various commodities such as cotton and the shipping of goods mainly from St. Joseph and Apalachicola, Florida. There are a few letters (1836) relating to Fontaine's service as a mayor of Columbus. These letters discuss problems the citizens of Columbus are having with the Indians. The collection also contains correspondence to and from family members including John Fontaine; his wife Mary Ann Stewart Fontaine; his brother B.B. Fontaine of Mobile (Ala.); and James H. Shorter.
